Why choose an elopement in Italy?

In the last decade, elopement in Italy has become really popular for couples looking for an intimate wedding in Europe.

The appeal of an elopement in Italy lies in its combination of romance and adventure.

The country offers a variety of picturesque settings that can turn a simple ceremony into an unforgettable experience.

Intimacy

An elopement in Italy allows couples to focus on their love without the stress of a large wedding. This setting fosters a deeper connection, free from distractions.

Couples can choose unique venues, from historic castles to quaint chapels, each providing a picturesque setting for their special day.

My tips for choosing the best location for your elopement in Italy

The exciting part is coming: it’s time to select the destination of your elopement in Italy

But where to start? Italy offers a diverse array of options and the possibilities are endless.

When picking your elopement spot, consider the following questions:

  • What types of landscapes do you both enjoy? Are you more drawn to beaches or do you prefer urban strolls, mountain treks, or scenic hills?
  • How do you envision spending the days surrounding your wedding? Would you like to rent a car for some adventures, or would you rather explore museums and galleries? Or maybe you’d prefer to relax in your cozy Italian villa?
  • How crucial is food in your experience? Do you dream of dining in a Michelin-star restaurant, or do you crave a leisurely lunch with local dishes?

Now, let me share with you my location selection for your elopement in Italy!

Veneto is not just a destination for your elopement in Italy; it’s a dream come true for couples looking for an unforgettable Italian experience.

Imagine exchanging vows in the shadow of the Dolomites or in front of the Garda Lake, surrounded by breathtaking views and nature. Cities like Venice, with its unique canals and iconic architecture, offer a magical backdrop for intimate ceremonies.

Couples can also choose from various locations, from the vineyards of Valpolicella and Prosecco to the charming streets of Verona, known for its connection to Romeo and Juliet.

Veneto also offers a variety of enchanting little cities in the countryside to say “I do” away from the hustle and bustle of traditional weddings like Asolo or Bassano.

Tuscany

Nestled between vineyards and historic architecture, this enchanting region offers an idyllic setting for couples seeking intimacy for their elopement in Italy.

Tuscany is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, which includes sun-drenched vineyards, olive groves, and ancient villas. From the iconic cypress-lined roads of Val d’Orcia to the rustic charm of San Gimignano, every corner of Tuscany is extremely romantic.

The capital city of the region, Florence, is a treasure of art and history and it is perfect for couples who want a blend of history and romance.

For wine lovers, the Chianti region is the perfect setting for a vineyard wedding.

We can’t forget Matera, which with the ancient “Sassi” caves, offers an incredible, historical setting. It is a UNESCO World Heritage city and the perfect setting for a timeless elopement in Italy.

Sicily

This multifaceted island, rich in history, and vibrant culture, is the perfect setting for your elopement in Italy. The island always has something for every couple.

You can’t miss charming towns, like Taormina and Cefalù and if you are history lovers the UNESCO World Heritage site of Agrigento is the best place to exchange vows.

If you are looking for something unique and scenic, Scala dei Turchi is what you need.

This white limestone cliff on the blue sea creates an unforgettable atmosphere.

I also recommend Noto, which is so elegant and charming. its beautiful churches and quaint streets provide a picturesque setting for your elopement in Italy.

The island’s delicious cuisine and fine wines add a special touch to the celebration, making it a real Italian experience.

How to get married in Italy

wedding in polignano

Many couples want to know how to get legally married in Italy.

Well, Italy’s bureaucracy is known for being complicated, and this extends to the marriage process as well. However, if having legally recognized your elopement in Italy is important to you, we can certainly make it happen (with the assistance of a local Italian celebrant).

Find a celebrant

First things first: if you want to get legally married in Italy, don’t try to handle it all on your own. The rules, paperwork, and requirements vary depending on your nationality and the specific Comune (town or council area) where you plan to marry. My advice? Find a local, English-speaking celebrant who can guide you through the entire process. As an added bonus, they’ll likely have connections with the people who will be making decisions about your application, which can make things smoother. If you’re not sure where to start looking for one, I’d be happy to recommend some of my favorite celebrants!

Get the documents

A celebrant will not only explain the legal steps but will also assist with filing the necessary paperwork as much as possible. To marry in Italy, you’ll need a nulla osta, an official document from your home country’s embassy in Italy, which certifies that there’s no legal reason you can’t marry in Italy. You’ll also need an atto notorio, a declaration from the Italian embassy or consulate in your hometown, stating that there are no obstacles to your marriage. This document must be obtained before you leave for Italy, and to do so, you’ll need to make sure you have all the required documents for the specific town hall in the Italian city where you plan to marry. It’s a bit of a hassle, but it’s all part of the process.

Have an official interpreter

Once all the paperwork is sorted, you’ll be mostly ready to go! The final step is to ensure you have an official interpreter if you don’t speak Italian, and to confirm that your wedding takes place at an approved location (a council-authorized venue).

Best time for your elopement in Italy

Of course, the best time for your elopement in Italy depends on what you want to do during your stay in the country.

If, like me, you love the sunshine, exploring new beaches, relaxing at a little table outside, and watching the world go by, then summer is the best moment to do it. That doesn’t necessarily mean high summer though!

I’d say the best time for your elopement in Italy is between the months of April and October. Italy is large, and the weather can change drastically from the north to the south.

If you plan to elope to one of the classic Italian locations I mentioned earlier, then I’d say it’s also a good idea to steer clear of the summer vacation period (mid-July to the end of August). Believe me, the best time for your elopement in Italy is whenever suits you. Italy has something to offer in every season.

How much does an elopement in Italy cost?

I’m going to be straight with you: it depends on your budget and what kind of experience you want.

I’ve had the privilege of knowing couples who splurge on luxury villas along the Amalfi Coast, complete with private chefs, villa managers, and a guest list of just them and their closest 10 friends. On the other hand, I also know clients who planned an unforgettable day for under €8000 (excluding flights). So, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to this question: elopements are as diverse and personal as the couples themselves.

When it comes to accommodation, prices can range from as low as €200 per night (or even less!) to several thousand. Your wedding attire will depend on your personal taste and where you’re traveling from. A bridal bouquet typically costs €100 or less, depending on the type of flowers you choose. As for celebrants, a symbolic ceremony generally starts at €550, and hair and makeup artists can charge anywhere from €550 to well over €1000, depending on your preferences.

So, if you’re looking for a wedding location that is both romantic and unforgettable, consider my country and I will pleased to support you in your elopement in Italy.
